About me
I am an autistic psychotherapist (or counsellor). My diagnosis came late in life, but the label was a beneficial game changer. Upon hearing those magic words, yes you are autistic, everything I had known about myself and others, made peculiar sense. In my head though, I did have to reinvent myself or rather, amalgamate the old version of me with the new. And further, when a second diagnosis came, there was ADHD to welcome too. This was even more bizarre as the ADHD component, my wild and boisterous side, would compete with my autism which felt like the presence of a peaceful Buddhist dwelling inside me. I learned to use both diagnoses as resources, calling on the Buddha when my wild thing needed to relax.
Feeling at home, accommodating all parts of me, could only
be done by moving to a larger residence. Thankfully I found that capacity. I took time to grieve for the unaware person who
had been me for the longest time and welcome the inevitable new. My world, inner
and outer, extended. Adventures were on the horizon, especially in the land of creativity.
I gave myself permission to be me.
My therapist’s training and my bizarre experience in a world
dominated by neurotypicals, inspired me to write - to voice. I hope to use this
ability to support other neurodivergent people, their families and friends and the
NAS.
